Zambia's Solar Market Expands with New 240MW PPA and Multiple Project Developments

Zambia's solar energy sector is experiencing significant growth, highlighted by a new 240MW power purchase agreement (PPA) between Axian Energy and Africa GreenCo for the Kudu solar PV plant. This development is part of a broader surge in solar PV projects and capacity additions across the country in 2025.

New 240MW PPA Signed for Kudu Solar PV Plant

Pan-African renewables developer Axian Energy has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with energy aggregator and trader Africa GreenCo in Zambia. The agreement covers the 240MW Kudu solar PV plant, which is financially backed by Standard Bank and Stanbic Bank Zambia as it approaches financial close and construction.

This PPA marks a significant step in Zambia's renewable energy landscape, reinforcing Axian Energy's presence in the country's energy market following its entry last year.

Growth in Zambia's Solar PV Capacity and Projects

Solar PV activity in Zambia has increased notably in 2025, with several projects commencing commercial operations. Noteworthy developments include the country's largest hybrid solar-plus-storage project by IPP Globeleq, combining 250MW of solar PV with a 150MW/600MWh battery energy storage system.

Additional projects include a 100MW solar plant by Indian company Nava and the 136MW Itimpi Phase II plant by Copperbelt Energy Corporation, supported by Chinese inverter and BESS provider Sungrow. The government has also contracted five groups to develop 312MW of solar capacity through a constituency solar programme.

With these developments, Zambia has already surpassed the 139MW of solar PV installed in 2025 and is among eight African countries to add more than 100MW of PV this year.

Axian Energy's Renewable Ambitions in Africa

Axian Energy aims to reach 2GW of installed renewable energy capacity across Africa by 2030. Its recent activities in Zambia, including the Kudu solar PV project, align with this strategic goal.

The company’s engagement in Zambia reflects the broader trend of building a borderless power market in Africa, as highlighted by industry leaders.
