West Virginia solar and storage portfolio combines three technologies

MN8 Energy, Google and Eos Energy Enterprises have announced an 86 MW solar project paired with zinc and lithium-ion storage in West Virginia. The staged portfolio is designed to support data-centre demand in the PJM market.

A staged hybrid portfolio

The planned portfolio combines 86 MW of solar, 10 MW/100 MWh of Eos zinc-based long-duration storage and 70 MW/280 MWh of lithium-ion storage. MN8 will own and operate the assets, which are intended to support Google data centres through the PJM market, including facilities in West Virginia.

The announced schedule places solar operation in 2028, lithium-ion storage in 2029 and zinc-based long-duration storage in 2030.

Offtake and site context

Google will purchase energy, capacity and clean-energy attributes from the portfolio. The project is planned on a reclaimed coal mine and is expected by the companies to represent up to US$350 million of investment, about 200 construction jobs and an estimated US$4 million in property taxes during its first 20 years.

Commercial implication

The project shows how large-load procurement can combine generation, short-duration storage, long-duration storage and a structured offtake route. Suppliers need to qualify technology interfaces, delivery years, controls and performance obligations across the full portfolio rather than assess each component in isolation.
