Project Overview and Location

Sumitomo has invested in a utility-scale renewable energy park in the south-western Indian state of Karnataka. The project, developed by Indian independent power producer Hero Future Energies, will combine 500MW of solar PV and wind power with a 200MWh battery energy storage system.

The hybrid project is in an advanced stage and aims to provide round-the-clock electricity primarily to the government-owned utility SJVN Limited through a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Ownership and Commercial Operation

Sumitomo will acquire a 49% stake in Clean Solar Power (Baniyana), the company undertaking the hybrid renewable energy project, while the remaining share will be owned by a subsidiary of Hero Future Energies.

The commercial operation date for the project is planned for March 2027.

Market and Strategic Significance

Surplus electricity generated by the project will be sold on the power exchange market. Sumitomo views this partnership as a way to strengthen its renewable energy business platform in India and pursue new opportunities supporting stable renewable energy supply.

Hybrid renewables-plus-storage projects are increasingly popular in India, linked to new procurement mechanisms such as firm and dispatchable renewable energy, round-the-clock, and peak-power supply tenders.
